5 Do's

5 important things to keep in mind to successfully implement ERP
1. Have a Plan B
ERP Projects often start with Plan A.  Plan A is where both the client and the implementer are sure they have understood all the deliverables and sign off on the scope of work.  However, things do go wrong, the client can change the requirements half way through the project or the implementer could resign from the company.  So, the need is to be flexible to changes and regroup and replan quickly to avert disaster.
2. Put on your teacher's cap
Remember the user is finally going to make or break the project. The only way to get people productive quickly is to pass on the knowledge.  Train at every level preferably before the final scope of work is signed off and before the go live.
3. Avoid Customization
ERP systems are at best a 80:20 fit. 80% of all requirements are the same for 80% of all users and is already a part of the system. 20% may need customization that takes 80% of the effort.  In order to avoid delays and unhappy clients avoid customizing the system.
4. Say 'NO' to Data Migration
Most users have no idea that the new systems has a different DNA from their legacy systems.  Data Migration has proved time and again to be the fatal blow to the project. The idea is not to put old fruit juice in a new bottle.  Move into the new system with out increasing the Total Cost of Ownership and enjoy the Return on investment early.
5. Don't forget the paperwork
Most of the time, consultants are busy delivering the project but forget the documentation.  Poor documentation  translates into incomplete project deadlines, lack of direction and endless frustration.
